Storm-Challenged: Warhawk M Triumphs to Claim Podium at 2026 Taiwan Ryukyu Regatta

The 2026 Taiwan Ryukyu Regatta  (including the Keelung International Regatta), a prestigious annual cross-border offshore rally connecting Taiwan and Japan, concluded with resounding success this week. This year’s event drew a record-breaking fleet of 36 sailing yachts representing 12 countries and regions. The grueling race course spanned three major maritime zones: Keelung (Taiwan), Ishigaki Island (Okinawa, Japan), and Miyako Island (Okinawa, Japan), attracting elite sailors from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Amid fierce international competition and severe weather disruptions triggered by a nearby tropical cyclone, Taiwan’s premier racing team, Warhawk Sailing, deployed their flagship performance cruiser, "Warhawk M (Elan E6)." Facing punishing conditions that included sustained winds over 35 knots, ferocious 4-meter swells, and relentless torrential rain, the crew demonstrated masterful tactical navigation and unflinching teamwork. While the official race course was designated at 240 nautical miles (nm), the extreme elements forced the team into exhaustive tactical tacking and battling strong counter-currents, resulting in an actual sailed distance of 372 nautical miles. Through sheer resilience, Warhawk M crossed the final finish line to secure a phenomenal 3rd Place Overall (2nd Runner-Up) in its division.

The multi-stage regatta pushed both vessel performance and crew endurance to their absolute limits across three distinct phases:

Phase 1: Keelung Island Race (June 5 – June 7) Gathering at the Badouzi (Bisha) Fishing Port in Keelung, the fleet kicked off with the coastal race around Keelung Island. Accurately anticipating a favorable shift as the wind moved aft, the crew executed a flawless tactical plan. Warhawk M dominated the waters to capture Line Honors (First to Finish Across All Divisions), ultimately securing 3rd place in its division standings and setting a powerful tone for the rest of the regatta.

Phase 2: Taiwan-Ishigaki Offshore Rally (June 8 – June 10) The true endurance test began with the ocean passage across the treacherous Kuroshio Current. Departing Keelung, the team first tackled the light winds, complex tidal currents, and rolling swells off Cape San-Diao. Once clear, they intercepted a roaring beam reach toward Ishigaki Island. With average winds blowing at 25 knots and gusts blasting up to 35 knots, Warhawk M unlocked her full racing potential, registering an exhilarating peak boat speed of 13 knots. Blasting through storm fronts, the yacht crossed the finish line in the pre-dawn twilight after a grueling 20 hours and 28 minutes, capturing another 3rd place division finish.

Phase 3: Ishigaki-Miyako Ocean Race (June 11 – June 13) Sailing north out of Ishigaki Port, the fleet was battered by the peak of the storm system. In blinding torrential rain and low visibility, the crew was forced into aggressive tacking, narrowly crossing paths with rival boats in high-stakes maneuvers. As they cleared the northern tip of Ishigaki Island, true winds exceeded 30 knots, with apparent wind speeds delivering a punishing 40-knot gale-force impact. Navigating between the Ryukyu islands while slamming into head-seas and fighting powerful counter-currents, the crew battled on the brink of hypothermia through the freezing night. After 16 hours and 18 minutes of pure grit, Warhawk M successfully made landfall in Miyako Island, finishing 6th across all divisions and 4th in its class.

Final Phase: Miyako Inshore Race (June 14) With less than 24 hours to recover from days of exhausting upwind and up-current pounding, the team mobilized for the final showdown. The Miyako Inshore Race demanded absolute technical precision. Operating in rain-soaked conditions with winds under 15 knots, Warhawk M executed a brilliant upwind start. After rounding the windward mark, the crew flawlessly hoisted the asymmetric spinnaker. Powering through two laps under the A2 spinnaker, the team engaged in exhilarating close-quarters tactical battles against top-tier international boats, securing 2nd Line Honors and a 3rd place division finish to wrap up an unforgettable, storm-tested regatta.

"This podium finish was forged in sweat, iron will, and relentless determination," stated the Warhawk Sailing team management post-race. "The official chart read 240 nautical miles, but we pushed through 372 miles on the water. Every single extra mile represents a calculated gamble and a hard-fought battle against the elements. We are immensely proud of our crew, who stood resolute in the face of hypothermia and gale-force storms. This 3rd Place Overall trophy belongs to every warrior aboard the Warhawk M."

Warhawk M's spectacular performance at the 2026 Taiwan Ryukyu Regatta  not only highlights the world-class capabilities of Taiwan’s offshore racing teams but also writes a thrilling new chapter in international maritime sports cooperation.
